The Dallas Rotary Club has been engaged successfully in a multiple co-operative international projects in Ghana, West Africa since 2007. The DRC partners with the local (Ghana) Host Rotary clubs on typical WASH projects including Clean Sustainable Water Wells development, Community Latrines development; Dental / Primary Medical health maintenance and Education.
Over this period of time, the DRC has provided services to over 20 rural communities, impacting well over 20,000 people. On our recent service trip in May 2018, we performed three clinics in rural areas where access to dental care is precariously unavailable. Our primary focus of service have targeted school aged children to promote healthy youth to facilitate future growth. Our efforts have been very successful so far. On this trip, in addition to tooth extractions and Fluoride Varnish applications, we provided every patient with oral hygiene instructions on how to brush their teeth and tips on healthy diet to mitigate tooth cavities; goodie bags which included toothpaste and toothbrush, children vitamins, and school supplies. We distributed clothes and shoes which were donated by fellow Rotarians and students of the Weaver Elementary School, in Garland Texas (One of our partnering entities from the USA).The exciting DRC Team to Ghana on this trip included 2 DRC Dentist Leaders (Drs. Liz Acquaye Kwarteng and Ted Fields); 1 volunteer Physician, 3 volunteer Dental Hygienists; 1 volunteer Nurse and other DRC member volunteers. The Ghanaian collaborating Team included 2 Dentists; 2 Dental students; Rotaracts from the University of Ghana; Volunteers from the Host Rotary Club in Accra, Ghana and local volunteers in the various communities that services were provided.
Plans are already in the works for another service trip to Ghana in January (1th to 18th) and May (24th to 31st) 2019. We are open to partner with any interested Club or entities in this rewarding and exciting service project. Come join us for this life changing experience of Service Above Self effort.
