On November 7th, The Rotary Club of Dallas hosted the 20th Annual Salute to America’s Veterans, honoring the veterans, whose contributions across the generations have maintained our freedom and liberty. This event raises funds for the DFW USO and the George W Bush Institute Veterans and Military Families; two organizations that are transforming the lives of our active military, our veterans and their families.
Thanks to our sponsors and members this event has raised approximately $750,000 in the past 20 years. Jody Dean, a member of the Texas Radio Hall of Fame was the Master of Ceremonies for the 16th year and engaged in a frank and often emotional ‘fireside chat’ with the Keynote Speaker, Major John "Lucky” Luckadoo, USAF, (Ret.), who, at 102, spoke frankly about his experiences some 80 years ago and the importance of remembering at what cost we have our freedom. Rotary Club of Dallas member, Lt. Col. Linus Wright, U.S. Army (Ret.). presented Major Luckadoo with the Perot Patriot Award in recognition of his service.
An enchanting performance by the American Bombshells, a modern-day rendition of the Andrews Sisters, further heightened the patriotic atmosphere with renditions of Military Service Hymns and other patriotic songs, including the National Anthem (a cappella) and closing with the Stars and Stripes. The event was attended by some 400 Rotarians and guests. Approximately 150 veterans included veterans from the Happy Warriors and the Green Beret Army Special Forces. NJROTC Cadets from the Rotary corporate member, Faith Family Academy, and members of the Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas played a vital role in welcoming and escorting veterans and guests. The event was covered on the evening news by local TV stations for Fox and CBS.
