On September 14th, Rotarians and community members will have a unique opportunity to come together for conversation, connection, and growth as Rotary Wylie East Fork hosts a Peace Summit. Designed to address rising polarization and encourage thoughtful, respectful dialogue, the event promises a full day of learning and engagement centered on practical peacebuilding skills.
Organizers say the summit is rooted in a simple but powerful idea: meaningful change begins when people are willing to listen to one another. Through guided discussions and interactive sessions, attendees will gain new perspectives and tools to navigate difficult conversations—skills that are increasingly vital in today’s social climate.
The day will feature a dynamic lineup of speakers, each bringing a distinct voice and lived experience to the conversation. Roza Patterson, Esq., a Wylie High School graduate, RYLA recipient, and public speaker focused on social and racial justice, received the Rotary International Global Grant Scholarship to pursue her master's degree in Peace and Conflict Prevention/Resolution. She will open the summit with remarks grounded in her legal and advocacy work.
Rev. Celestin Musekura, Ph.D., an internationally recognized leader in reconciliation efforts, will share insights drawn from decades of work helping communities heal from conflict. His message of transformation through understanding and unity will set a powerful tone for the day.
Dr. Heather Hodges, an organizational psychologist, will guide participants through a research-based framework that explores how individuals approach challenges and interact across differences. Her session will encourage attendees to better understand themselves and others, fostering more productive and empathetic exchanges.
Rotary leaders hope the summit will serve as more than a one-day event. By creating space for face-to face dialogue and skill-building, they aim to strengthen the community's fabric and inspire ongoing efforts toward civility and connection.
