Each year, as Memorial Day approaches, the area surrounding Melissa City Hall transforms into a powerful tribute to service and sacrifice. Through the Melissa Honors Military program—supported by the Melissa Rotary Club and facilitated by the City of Melissa—banners featuring the faces and names of local service members rise proudly along the walkways and green spaces.
From Memorial Day through Patriots Day, these banners stand beside rows of U.S. flags, creating a moving display that honors Melissa High School graduates who are currently serving in the United States Armed Forces. Each banner tells a story: a young person who walked the halls of Melissa High School, wore the Cardinal red, and then chose a path of duty and courage.
Families visit to see their loved ones recognized. Neighbors pause to reflect. Students walk past and see real examples of service from people who once sat in the same classrooms. The display becomes more than decoration—it becomes a living reminder of commitment, sacrifice, and community pride.
