Last year as a part of the Birthday Celebration for PDG C. C. Collie’s 100th birthday, a special scholarship was created in PDG C. C.’s name for a deserving member of the JROTC at Hillcrest H.S. This year the program was expanded, and two scholarships were awarded to two very accomplished students.
One winner, Nicolas Anthony Powell, graduated from HHS as a member of the JROTC, the current Brigade Commander of DISD. He participated in the student council, Texas Boys State, and was enrolled in the Collegiate Academy, earning an Associate's Degree in college, during his high school years. He will enroll in The Citadel in Charleston, SC and join The United States Army upon graduation from college.
The other winner, Najat Shaibu, graduated from HHS as an active member of the JROTC. She came to the U.S. from Africa during her Junior year knowing very little English. During her time at Hillcrest, she participated in the Robotics team as well as the JROTC Academic and Leadership team. She participated in over fifteen After School volunteer events and has logged over thirty hours of service for others. She will enter Midwestern State University in the fall and will be a part of the ROTC team. She will study Anesthesiology and join the Air Force upon graduation.
