Pedaling with Purpose: An Interview with a Cycling to Serve Member Cycling to Serve USA/Canada, the Rotary Fellowship of cycling enthusiasts, blends service, friendship, and two wheels. We spoke with Harold McLeod, Membership Director, and member of The Rotary Club of McKinney, about what makes the group special.
What inspired you to join?
“It’s the perfect mix of cycling and Rotary values—friendship, service, and peace,” Harold shared.
Favorite event?
“The Ride to End Polio at El Tour de Tucson. This is our primary event and where our excess funds are donated. Riding together for such an important cause is powerful.”
Other highlights?
From vineyard rides in Ontario and Colorado to The Rotary Club of Greenville’s Cotton Patch Challenge and the Mesquite Club’s Rodeo Road Rally, the fellowship promotes events for every pace. Harold challenged, “We want more input from our members. We ask each member to share their favorite rides through our website. https://cycling2serve.us/events.”
A bit of history?
Cycling to Serve began in the 1980s in Belgium, officially forming in 1988. Since then, it’s grown into a global fellowship with touring and service traditions.
Membership?
“Just $20 a year, open to Rotarians, their partners, and Rotaractors,” Harold explained. “Members also enjoy custom-designed apparel and access to the organization’s Strava page.”
Harold’s goal?
The fellowship’s membership mostly represents clubs across the northern half of the United States. My goal is for every Texas Rotarian who cycles to become a member of the fellowship.”
Why does it matter?
“Beyond the rides, it’s about building community and making a difference. Every turn of the wheel connects us more deeply to Rotary’s mission.”
