"Our loved ones never really leave us," Rotarian and President of 1LT.  Welch Run charity shared as she inspired community members to lace up and run in remembrance for the 10th annual Run for our Heroes event Saturday, April 17th.
Residents and Rotarians convened around town to honor our military, police, fire and EMT in a virtual 5K. After this socially distanced event, an opening ceremony at Wylie's Olde City Park was performed by Wylie High School's ROTC and City of Wylie Fire Pipes and Drums. Lunch was served to anyone representing the celebrated groups and the evening closed with a moving rendition of "Taps."

1 LT Robert F. Welch Run for our Heroes was established to preserve the memory of Wylie native and Army 1LT Rob Welch who was killed in Afghanistan on April 3, 2011. Becky Welch, Welch’s widow, wanted to pay tribute to her husband and other fallen soldiers and recognize those currently serving as well as local veterans, firemen and police officers. Funds raised in support of this cause remain local by supporting Texas National Guard Armory's food pantry, paying unexpected bills for servicemen in need, and supporting projects that aid police, fire or EMT.
