This week, the Plano West Rotary Club traded our usual meeting agenda for something far more colorful and sweet. We rolled up our sleeves, opened boxes of cake mix, and set out bright decorations with one mission in mind: to make sure a child’s birthday never passes unnoticed.
For families struggling to put food on the table, a birthday can quietly slip by. No cake. No candles. No moment where the child feels like the most important person in the room. That thought didn’t sit right with us.
So we packed 36 birthday bags, each filled with cake mix, frosting, party hats, balloons, and a sprinkle of joy. We decorated every bag by hand, imagining the smile of the child who would open it. We laughed, shared stories from our own childhood birthdays, and remembered how a single day of feeling loved can stay with you for years.
By the end of the meeting, the tables were empty, our hands were a little sticky with frosting dust, and our hearts were full. Thirty-six children will have a reason to celebrate this month. That is why we serve.
