In February, White Rock Rotary Club stepped up to provide a small grant to the Rotary Club of New Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies in support of their hurricane relief efforts. While recognizing that we were working with limited funds, we decided to contribute anyway because every little bit helps.
Our contribution was very welcome. The attached picture is a snapshot of a program in an area called Bunker’s Hill, which is a rural community located in Trelawny Parish on the northwest coast of the island. In the late 1700s the estate produced sugar and rum. By the 1800s 245 slaves lived and worked on the estate. Today it is a farming community plus a tourist center that emphasizes eco-tourism and cultural experiences.
This relief program served 400 residents including 150 children who received relief supplies. Several organizations partnered with RCNK to ensure the success of the project. These partners were Doctors, Dentists, Opticians (free glasses), Counselors, Pharmacists and Staff from the Heart Trust, and Land Titles Office who provided services to address rebuilding of the community.
